Calvin Lee – President, Promate Electronics, Taiwan ROC

Calvin is a well respected and established high technology executive who is recognized as playing a defining role in the ongoing spectacular growth of Promate Electronics, a Top Tier distributor and manufacturer.

He graduated from Taiwan’s National Chiao Tung University (NCTU) in 1983, majoring in Electronic Engineering. NCTU is a well noted research university located in Hsinchu, Taiwan, near the epicenter of Taiwan’s highly successful Science Park. The university is renowned for its research and teaching excellence in electrical engineering, computer science and management science. Its alumni dominate Taiwan's electronics and computer industries with more than 500 Presidents and CEO's. As a result of this, Calvin is well connected with his alumni and therefore, in all aspects of Taiwan’s high technology market. In 2003, Calvin returned to to NCTU for an Executive MBA course graduated with a Master’s degree in 2005.

After graduating in 1983, ITRI hired Calvin as an engineer. ITRI, The Industrial Technology Research Institute, is a non-profit R&D organization engaging in applied research and technical services. It was founded in 1973 by the Ministry of Economic Affairs (MOEA) to attend to the technological needs of Taiwan's industrial development. ITRI has played a vital role in the transformation of the economy from an agriculture-based model to an industrial one. By year 2001 it had grown to a 6000 people operation, and serves as the technical center for industry and an unofficial arm of the government's industrial policies in Taiwan. Backed by its broad research scope and close industrial ties, ITRI is becoming an increasingly active member in the global industrial R&D community.

In 1986, Calvin spent a short time at Wang Labs and in 1987 experienced his first role in the high technology distribution marketplace when he joined Weikeng, a full-service electronics components & peripheral distributor, serving Asia Pacific.

In 1992, Calvin joined Promate Electronic Co. ( and now serves as its President.

Established in 1986, it had a clear vision of the future and of the Taiwanese high technology market, continually growing with its ever changing market trends. Promate was originally a computer peripheral distributor, but soon evolved into a semiconductor component channel leader and custom display and module manufacturer. Given the company's strong reputation and experience in franchise distributing name brand semiconductor products, with Calvin’s leadership, Promate has been able to secure a long list of leading electronics manufacturers in a relatively short time for its new corporate direction. It was also essential for the company to quickly build an extensive and complete product line, thereby satisfying the increasingly diverse needs of its customers. With this focus in mind, Promate has been able to adopt a better corporate strategy for the long run. This is no better demonstrated than by the unequaled growth Promate has experienced, during Calvin’s guidance. In that time frame, Promate has grown from 30 people and revenue of $10M USD in 1992, to 310 employees and over $700M USD in 2007. During this spectacular growth of over 20% per year, EPS (after tax) has remained > 3.

Promate distributes integrates and customizes leading manufacturers of LCD panels, driving boards, touch panels and high brightness enhancements for NB, Monitor, TV, embedded display module, GPS, VoIP, WiFi, high performance linear IC’s. It focuses on all Tier 1 accounts in Taiwan and China, engaged in the medical, military, industrial, in-flight entertainment, communication, security, and automotive markets. As a manufacturer and integrator of LCD modules, it has also experienced success on a global basis with customers like GM and Sun Microsystems, to name a few.
